Soulmate philosophy

“Soulmate is for that demanding player , who needs his bass to work all the time, in different musical situations, who wants to play long hours without getting tired.”

My goal for Soulmate was specific. This bass had to have P character, in sound, handling, and feel. This bass also had to be comfortable, light weight, easy to play a whole night show with. Soulmate is a blend of old and new.

Fundamental to an authentic P feel is that 44mm wide neck (or 1.75″ ). It kinda slows you down, compared to a Jazz neck, but to me that’s exactly the point of getting into the soul of a good P sound. It forces you to focus on groove and timing, phrasing and coloring, instead of inviting you to do fast runs and slap bass. I find some vintage necks a little too bulky.  I like the early 60s P necks that were wide and thin. That’s what I do with Soulmate. And on top of that our necks have a little less shoulder, making them feel even more comfortable.

Just like Bebop, this bass is a salute to the original, but it’s also a 21st century bass. The same neck reinforcements and details to frets and fret slots that I use on Bebop necks are used in Soulmate necks. Thanks to our unique compound fingerboard radius a very comfortable setup can be realised. You can even string it up with thick flats without feeling you’re wrestling a bear.

Another thing to mention is the brass bridge, like we use on our Bebop model.  Brass sounds a bit more balanced and even, compared to a traditional steel bridge. It also feels like it has a wider frequency range. Your overall P sound is still there , but  brass makes it a bit more versatile, or adaptive to different styles and music genres.

Soulmate is designed for that demanding player, who needs his bass to work all the time, in different musical situations, who wants to play long hours without getting tired. If you really need an all out vintage P tone, then Soulmate Classic might be more your kind of bass.
